Bathophobia is literally the fear of depths. Basically, “bathos” means depth and “phobos” means fear.
Normally, the person with Bathophobia experience anxiety when having thoughts about falling from high places or being consumed by objects with remarkable depth.
Oftentimes, such person fears falling or being into long, dark hallways, a deep pool or lake or a well.
Symptoms of Bathophobia
Sufferers of bathophobia and some other kinds of phobia actually experience some symptoms such as fear of dying, breathlessness, dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, and becoming mad or losing control.

The precise cause of bathophobia is not yet known. Though a number of studies and researches were already made, there is not yet enough enough information as to what exactly the reason why a person experience phobias like bathophobia.
However, according to some studies, bathophobia may have evolved from distorted thoughts. Development and occurrence of bathophobia is also said to be from some traumatic incidents or events that have taken place in the past.
